![]() In Stone Blind, classicist and comedian Natalie Haynes turns our understanding of this legendary myth on its head, bringing empathy and nuance to one of the earliest stories in which a woman-injured by a powerful man-is blamed, punished, and monstered for the assault. Until Perseus embarks upon a fateful quest to fetch the head of a Gorgon. Cursed with the power to destroy all she loves with one look, Medusa condemns herself to a life of solitude. Writhing snakes replace her hair and her gaze will turn any living creature to stone. Punished for Poseidon's actions, Medusa is forever transformed. Furious by the violation of her sacred space, Athene takes revenge-on the young woman. When the sea god Poseidon assaults Medusa in Athene's temple, the goddess is enraged. Her mortal lifespan gives her an urgency that her family will never know. Unlike her siblings, Medusa grows older, experiences change, feels weakness. The only mortal in a family of gods, Medusa is the youngest of the Gorgon sisters. ![]() ![]() They will fear you and flee you and call you a monster. ![]()

![]() ![]() I cried along with Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz as they lose loved ones and struggle with God in the midst of such deep sorrow and celebrated in their joy.Īnother well done book by Tessa Afshar! It did not disappoint. Ruth struggles with some of the same things I do, and as she learns new things about trusting God and becoming more like Him, so do I! There are light bulb moments and there are laugh-out-loud moments. Tessa has honed her story telling talent well! She fleshes out Biblical characters and makes them real people, so real it feels like maybe I could be sitting in Ruth’s living room hearing her tell her story. I need to remember to not read Tessa’s books just before bed…I know it will happen – it always does! I say to myself, “One chapter, just one! Maybe two…” But then I read through the night and when my eyes finally rebel and say no more it’s almost time to get up for the day! These reviews were originally published on Amazon, and the authors have given me permission to reprint their reviews on my blog. I’d like to share with you three reader reviews of In the Field of Grace. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hailed on publication in Australia as Richard Flanagan's greatest novel yet, The Living Sea of Waking Dreams is a rising ember storm, illuminating what remains when the inferno beckons: one part elegy, one part dream, one part hope. But the window keeps opening wider, taking Anna and the listener ever deeper into an eerily beautiful story of grief and possibility, of loss and love and orange-bellied parrots. All Anna can do is keep her mother alive. ![]() She begins to see that all around her, others are similarly vanishing, yet no one else notices. When Anna's finger vanishes and a few months later her knee disappears, Anna too feels the pull of the window. It is actively participated in by the journeyer who is embarking on an exploration of consciousness to make discoveries, not to manipulate, but to freely find under the aegis of a guide at the beginning of such experiences. Condemned by her children's pity to living, subjected to increasingly desperate medical interventions, she turns her focus to her hospital window, through which she escapes into visions of horror and delight. Andrew Harlan is an interesting and likable protagonist, and the mysterious Noys Lambent a fascinating partner for him. It’s also a lot more character-driven than a lot of Asimov’s more famous works. ![]() Tight prose, a championing of intellect over brute force, and a well-plotted romp to boot. This novel has all the hallmarks you’d expect from an Asimov tale. Enough time had passed that I’d forgotten some of the twists and turns the story takes, and so I was just as gripped as a fresh reader could hope to be. Coming back a few years later, this claustrophobic tale is much more enjoyable. ![]() I’ve always preferred my SF set in space, with massive worldbuilding. ![]() The first time I read The End of Eternity, I wasn’t that impressed. ![]() ![]() A provocative exploration of the mysteries of the human mind, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat is a million-copy bestseller by the twentieth century's greatest neurologist. If inconceivably strange, these brilliant tales illuminate what it means to be human. Here are people who can no longer recognize everyday objects or those they love who are stricken with violent tics or shout involuntary obscenities who have been dismissed as autistic or retarded, yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents.
